Boat Sales Etiquette

There is nothing more frustrating than someone who wastes your time and is not genuinely committed to proper boat sale negotiations. Of course, realistically, not everyone that shows interest in your boat will end up buying it on the spot – even though one can dream!

Ultimately, both the buyer and seller want the same thing; a great deal.

Here are a few dos and don’ts of boat sales etiquette:

Seller

Do: Be honest. If your vessel needs some repairs or has some hidden issues, then spill the beans; lay it out on the table. This way the sales process can be as straightforward as possible from the get go.

Do: Be realistic. Of course, you want the best possible price but be real. How old is your boat? What condition is she in? You are the best person to know what she is genuinely worth. Just remember – Karma – what goes around comes around!

Do: Stick to your word. If there are several interested parties then be honest with all parties, don’t try to play one against the other as it may just backfire.

Don’t: Display anger or frustration. Every buyer has a different approach; some buyers take their time and want to carry out the due diligence, want a survey done and possibly a sea trial. If you are too pushy, it can make people feel uncomfortable.

Buyer

Don’t try to low-ball a boat that you haven’t even seen. Respect is key! If you are interested, get as much information as possible, set up a time and inspect the boat in person.

Do: Pick a time and stick to it. Don’t keep someone waiting, as the expression goes ‘time is money’ but that goes for the person waiting as well.

Don’t look at the vessel and pinpoint all the negatives in the hopes of getting a lower price. This is just irritating and disrespectful. You know what you are willing to pay, and the seller knows what his selling price is – so just negotiate from there.

Do:  Be straightforward, if there is something that can detract from a sale; then bring it up. Talk to the seller – if you have a good connection then you may just get your offer accepted.

N.B. Mutual respect is crucial. Just make an offer and go back and forth if need be but don’t push. Boats are very emotional, so tread carefully.
